Epoxy River Tables: Durability, Care and What Sets the Price

Is an epoxy river table durable enough for everyday dining? Yes, for daily meals and work, as long as you treat the resin like a fine finish: trivets under hot pans, coasters under hot mugs, and a soft damp cloth for cleaning. Below: what epoxy actually is, where it is tough and where it is not, why no two tables look the same, and what drives the price.

Every table in this guide comes from our epoxy river table collection. Each one is a walnut or chestnut slab with resin poured into its natural gaps, which makes each piece one of one.

What is epoxy resin?

Epoxy is a two-part material: a liquid resin and a hardener. Once the two are mixed, a chemical reaction starts and the liquid slowly cures into a rigid, glossy solid that bonds well to wood. That is why furniture makers use it in three ways:

  • River pours. Two live-edge slabs are set apart and resin fills the space between them, so the natural edges of the tree become the "banks" of a river.
  • Crack and knot fills. Natural splits and knots are filled so the surface is flat and usable, and the defect becomes part of the pattern.
  • Inlays and patterns. Resin is poured into shapes cut into the wood, like the branch inlay on our round Autumn walnut epoxy tree branch table.

Pouring and curing is workshop work: it needs ventilation, gloves and eye protection, and the resin has to be mixed in the right ratio. All of that happens before the table leaves the workshop. What reaches your home is a finished, fully cured surface.

Are epoxy tables durable in daily use?

Cured epoxy is hard, does not soak up spills the way bare wood does, and wipes clean easily. But it has two limits that matter at a dining table.

Heat. Resin softens long before it burns. Resin makers publish a "heat deflection temperature", the point where cured epoxy starts to soften, and MAS Epoxies notes that most tabletop epoxies sit around 100–130°F, adding that anything hot enough to burn you can leave an impression. In practice: a pan from the stove or a boiling kettle always goes on a trivet, and hot mugs go on coasters.

Scratches. Resin is a hard plastic, not stone. Sliding ceramics, keys or laptop feet across it will leave fine marks over time, and a glossy surface shows them more than a matte oiled one. Placemats and felt pads go a long way.

The finish over the wood also differs from table to table, and each product page says which one it has. The Graphite is finished with VOC-free wood oils, the Concord with a high-gloss Italian lacquer, and the Autumn with a high-gloss protective sealant. Oiled walnut feels like wood under your hand and is easy to refresh. Gloss looks deeper and wetter but shows scuffs sooner. For everyday care of both, see our solid wood dining table care guide.

Will my table look like the photo?

This is the most common worry with river tables, and it deserves a straight answer. No two slabs are the same, so the table you receive will not match the photo grain for grain. The species, resin color, size and base will match the listing. The exact shape of the river, the knots, the swirl in a pearl-effect pour and the darker heartwood streaks will be unique to your slab.

Two policy points are worth knowing before you order. Under our return policy, a difference in color tone is not a reason for return. Standard-size pieces can be returned within 30 days of delivery in the US and Canada if they are new and in their original packaging, but custom, personalized and clearance items cannot be returned. If the look of the river matters most to you, email support@upphomestore.com before you order and ask what to expect from the grain and resin on the model you like.

What sets the price of an epoxy river table?

Searches for "epoxy river table price" usually want a number, but the honest answer is a list of factors, because the same model can vary a lot by size and options. These are the ones that move the price, with what to check on each product page:

Factor Why it matters What to check
Slab size Long, wide slabs with good grain are scarce Our dining models run from 42x30" (107x76 cm) to 95x40" (240x101 cm)
Slab thickness Thicker wood costs more and feels heavier Listings state 1 inch or 1.5–2 inches (3–5 cm)
Resin volume A full black frame or wide river uses far more resin than crack fills Compare a wide river with an "epoxy details" model like the Concord
Resin color and effect Changes the whole look; some listings offer other colors on request Blue, navy, burgundy, black or clear
Base The base is its own component, with its own material and work Metal legs, wooden legs, or "customizable leg styles"
Finish Oil and high gloss are different processes with a different feel Natural oil vs high-gloss lacquer or sealant
Custom size A one-off slab and pour for your room Not returnable, so confirm measurements first

If a river table is more than you want to spend on a dining piece, a smaller epoxy piece is a good way to live with resin first. Side and coffee tables use the same walnut and resin at a fraction of the slab size.

Epoxy river table or plain live edge?

A river table is about the resin: color, depth and a strong focal point. A plain live edge slab is about the wood alone, and usually reads quieter in a traditional room. If you are still choosing between the two, our live edge dining table guide covers sizing for 4, 6 and 8, slab choice and bases. For the wood itself, see is walnut good for furniture?

How it ships, and what happens if it arrives damaged

Epoxy dining tables are large handmade pieces: expect about 6–7 weeks of production, then 3–5 business days of shipping. Shipping to the US and UK is free, by DHL Express, TNT, UPS or FedEx, and a signature is required at delivery. Some models, like the Missouri, ship partially assembled with the legs to attach.

If the box is visibly damaged on the outside, do not accept it and ask for a Damage Assessment Report. If you find damage after unpacking, email support@upphomestore.com right away with photos. Damaged parts are replaced free of charge, and for damaged or wrong items we pay the return shipping. In New York, New Jersey and Connecticut you can add White Glove delivery for 199 USD per order. With White Glove, note any damage at delivery and send photos within 48 hours for a repair or replacement.

Epoxy table care in five lines

  • Trivets under anything from the stove or oven; coasters under hot drinks.
  • Wipe with a soft, damp cloth and dry it. Skip abrasive pads and harsh solvents.
  • Placemats under ceramics that get slid around.
  • Keep the table out of all-day direct sun, which is hard on both wood and finish.
  • On oiled models, re-oil the wood when it starts to look dry.

Epoxy table FAQ

Are epoxy tables durable?

Yes, for normal dining and work. Cured resin is hard and easy to wipe clean. Its weak points are heat and fine scratches, so use trivets, coasters and placemats.

Can you put a hot pan on an epoxy table?

No. Tabletop epoxy starts to soften at temperatures far below a hot pan, so a pan or kettle can leave a permanent mark. Always use a trivet.

Is an epoxy side table or resin coffee table a good place to start?

Yes, if you want to see resin and walnut in your own light before committing to a dining table. Try a walnut side table with a blue epoxy river or browse our epoxy resin coffee tables.

Can I order an epoxy table in a custom size or resin color?

Several listings, including the Obsidian and the Missouri, mention custom sizes or resin colors on request. Custom pieces cannot be returned, so confirm measurements and color in writing before production starts.
