Live Edge Dining Table Buying Guide: Slab, Size and Base
What size live edge dining table do you need? Plan on about 24 inches of table edge per person: a 60x30" (152x76 cm) slab seats four, a 72x34" (183x86 cm) seats six, and a 95x40" (240x101 cm) seats eight. After size, choose the slab (walnut or chestnut, plain or with resin) and the base. This guide walks through all three.
Every table mentioned here is in our live edge dining table collection. Each one is built from its own slab, so each one is one of one.
What makes a table "live edge"?
A live edge table keeps the natural outer edge of the tree instead of cutting it straight. The curves, bark lines, knots and cracks that a sawmill would normally trim away stay on the table. Some of our slabs are left plain. Others have their cracks and knots filled with resin, or a full epoxy river poured down the middle.
Because the edge follows the tree, measurements are approximate by nature. Our Harvest live edge walnut dining table and the Sierra chestnut table both note that size may vary by 0–1 inch due to the handcrafted process. Measure your room with that inch of margin in mind.
Live edge dining table size: for 4, 6, 8 or 12
A widely used rule from Dummies' guide to choosing a dining table: plan at least 24 inches of table edge for each place setting (30 inches is more comfortable), and leave at least 24 inches behind each chair so people can get past. Applied to the six sizes our live edge dining tables come in, that works out like this:
| Table size | Comfortable seating | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 42x30" | 107x76 cm | 2, up to 4 with end seats | Breakfast nook, small kitchen |
| 47x28" | 119x71 cm | 4, snug | Apartment dining, couple who hosts sometimes |
| 60x30" | 152x76 cm | 4, up to 6 with end seats | Live edge dining table for 4 |
| 72x34" | 183x86 cm | 6 | Live edge dining table for 6 |
| 80x36" | 203x91 cm | 6, up to 8 with end seats | Family of six that hosts holidays |
| 95x40" | 240x101 cm | 8, up to 10 snug | Live edge dining table that seats 8 |
The seating counts are our own estimates from the 24-inch rule. Wide armchairs need more room than slim side chairs, and where the legs sit matters too (more on that below). The Harvest and Sierra product pages describe these tables as seating 4 to 8 people across the size range.
Seating 12? None of the standard sizes reach that. At 24 inches a person, twelve diners need a slab well over 100 inches long, which means a custom size. Some listings mention custom sizes on request. Custom pieces cannot be returned, so confirm every measurement in writing first.
Choosing the slab: walnut or chestnut, plain or resin
Our live edge dining tables are made in two main woods, and each product page states which.
- Walnut. The Pioneer and the Harvest are both 100% European walnut, with the deep brown tones walnut is known for. Read is walnut good for furniture? for how it wears.
- Chestnut. The Sierra and the Terra are 100% European chestnut. In our photos the chestnut reads lighter and more golden, with bold growth rings. See our chestnut wood guide.
Thickness is listed per model. Some state 1 inch, others 1.5–2 inches (3–5 cm). A thicker slab looks and feels more substantial at the edge, which is where a live edge table gets noticed.
Plain or resin? A plain slab is all wood and fits a traditional or farmhouse room. Resin-filled cracks keep the wood look but make the surface flat and continuous. A full epoxy river turns the table into the room's focal point. Our epoxy river table guide covers resin durability and care.
Choosing the base: metal or wood legs
Many of our live edge dining tables stand on metal legs, including the Harvest and the Sierra. The Pioneer uses solid wooden legs, and some listings mention customizable leg styles and materials on request. A few practical points:
- Metal legs at each end, like the trapezoid frame in the Sierra photo above, keep the long sides free for chairs.
- Center or X-shaped bases give knees more room at the corners but can get in the way of end chairs. Check where the feet land before you plan a seat at each end.
- Wooden legs keep the whole piece in one material and suit a farmhouse or traditional room. Black metal adds contrast and suits a modern one.
Will it look like the photo?
It will be the same species, size, finish and base. It will not be the same slab. Every live edge top is cut from a different tree, so the curve of the edge, the knots and the grain will be your table's own. That is the point of live edge, but it is worth knowing before you order. Under our return policy, a difference in color tone is not a reason for return. Standard-size pieces can be returned within 30 days of delivery in the US and Canada if they are new and in their original packaging. If a particular look matters to you, email support@upphomestore.com before ordering and ask what to expect.
Lead time, delivery and setup
Live edge dining tables are large handmade pieces: expect about 6–7 weeks of production, then 3–5 business days of shipping. Shipping to the US and UK is free, by DHL Express, TNT, UPS or FedEx, and someone needs to sign at delivery. On models like the Harvest and the Terra, the top and legs ship separately, and the product pages describe screw-on legs that take about five minutes to attach.
If the box arrives visibly damaged, do not accept it and ask for a Damage Assessment Report. If you find damage after unpacking, email support@upphomestore.com right away with photos. Damaged parts are replaced free of charge. In New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, White Glove delivery is available for 199 USD per order.
Once it is in place, the wood needs simple, regular care. Several of our live edge tables are finished with VOC-free natural oil. Our solid wood dining table care guide covers cleaning and re-oiling.
Live edge dining table FAQ
What size live edge dining table seats 6?
A 72x34" (183x86 cm) table gives six people about 24 inches each. If you host often or use armchairs, step up to 80x36" (203x91 cm).
What size live edge dining table seats 8?
Plan on 95x40" (240x101 cm). An 80x36" (203x91 cm) table can seat eight with one chair at each end, but it will be snug.
What chairs go with a live edge table?
Pick chairs that repeat one element of the table: walnut chairs with a walnut slab, or black frames with black metal legs. Upholstered seats soften a heavy slab. Browse our walnut dining chairs, and check that the seat height clears the table's apron or frame.
Are live edge tables durable?
Yes. Our live edge tops are solid walnut or solid chestnut slabs, finished with natural oil or a protective coating depending on the model. Like any solid wood, they take daily use well with coasters, trivets and regular care.
