What Size Dining Table Seats 6? Size Guide for 4 to 10 People

Light chestnut rectangular dining table with a solid panel base and six oval cane-back chairs around it

A dining table that seats 6 comfortably is about 72 inches long and 34–36 inches wide (183 x 86 cm). For 8 people, go to 80 x 36 inches; for 4, a 60 x 30 inch table is enough. Then check the room: you need roughly 36 inches of open floor on every side so chairs can pull out.

Those are the same sizes we label on our own tables: on the solid chestnut dining table with a panel base, the 60 x 30 inch size is marked as a 4-seater, 72 x 34 inches as a 6-seater and 80 x 36 inches as an 8-seater. This guide walks through each size, the room it needs, and the chair arithmetic that trips most people up.

Dining table sizes for 4, 6, 8 and 10 people

The common planning rule designers use is about 24 inches of table edge per person. That is enough for a plate, glass and elbows without bumping your neighbor. Divide the length of one side by 24 and you have the number of chairs that side can hold. The ends of a 30–40 inch wide table each fit one chair.

Here is how that works out for the sizes we make most dining tables in, from the walnut dining table collection:

Table size Seats comfortably Snug (ends used) Minimum room
42 x 30" | 107 x 76 cm 2 4 9'6" x 8'6"
47 x 28" | 119 x 71 cm 2–4 4 10' x 8'4"
60 x 30" | 152 x 76 cm 4 6 11' x 8'6"
72 x 34" | 183 x 86 cm 6 8 12' x 8'10"
80 x 36" | 203 x 91 cm 8 8–10 12'8" x 9'
94–95 x 40" | 240 x 101 cm 10 10–12 14' x 9'4"

Bold numbers match the seating labels on our product pages (4-, 6-, 8- and 10-seater). "Minimum room" is the table plus 36 inches of clearance on every side, rounded up.

Walnut dining table for 6: 72 inches is the sweet spot

"Walnut dining table for 6" is the size question people search most on our site, and the answer is almost always 72 x 34 inches. It gives three chairs per long side at 24 inches each, with the ends free for serving or a seventh guest on a holiday.

Go shorter, and six only fits if two people sit at the ends, which works for a weeknight but feels tight with serving dishes on the table. Go to 80 inches if you host often: the extra 8 inches turn "six plus one squeezed in" into a relaxed eight.

Dining table for 8: 80 inches long and at least 36 inches wide

For eight people, 80 x 36 inches is the size we label as an 8-seater: three chairs per side plus one at each end. Width matters as much as length here. At 36 inches or more there is room down the middle for platters, which a 30-inch kitchen table does not have.

If you regularly seat ten, step up to 94–95 x 40 inches. That length also suits families who seat eight every day and want room for a buffet-style spread down the center.

Dining table for 4: 60 inches rectangular or a round table

For four, a 60 x 30 inch rectangular table seats two per side with room to spare. In a small kitchen, a 47 x 28 inch table seats four snugly if two people sit at the ends.

Round tables are often the better fit for four in a square room, because everyone can see everyone and there are no corners to walk around. Our round solid walnut table comes in three diameters:

  • 36" | 92 cm: 2 comfortably, 4 for coffee or a small kitchen
  • 40" | 102 cm: 4 comfortably
  • 45" | 115 cm: 4 with generous room, 5 if snug

How much room do you need around a dining table?

The common rule is 36 inches between the table edge and a wall or other furniture. That covers a chair pulled out plus someone sitting down. If people need to walk behind seated guests, for example on the route from the kitchen, plan 42–48 inches on that side.

A quick way to check before you order:

  1. Measure the room wall to wall, then subtract any sideboard or console that sticks into it.
  2. Subtract 72 inches from the length and 72 inches from the width (36 inches per side). What is left is the largest table that fits.
  3. Mark that rectangle on the floor with painter's tape and walk around it with a chair. It takes five minutes and saves most sizing regrets.

Measuring first matters with handmade furniture. Returns are accepted within 30 days only for items in new condition and original packaging, and custom sizes cannot be returned at all, so the tape on the floor is your best insurance.

Chairs, benches and the arithmetic of six

Most people choose the table and then discover the chair count. In our own orders from January 2025 to August 2026, sets of four chairs outnumbered sets of six almost two to one, and plenty of customers bought chairs for a table they already had. A few practical checks:

  • Armchairs take more room. Two armchairs at the ends and side chairs along the length is the classic layout for a 72- or 80-inch table.
  • Check the base. Trestle or panel bases leave the long sides clear. Four corner legs are best on longer tables, where chairs sit between them.
  • A bench adds a seat. On one long side, a bench lets children or a fourth adult squeeze in where chairs would not fit, and slides fully under the table when not in use.
  • Matching wood. If you are buying chairs for a table you already own, ask us for photos in daylight first. Walnut varies from piece to piece, and we explain why in Is Walnut Good for Furniture?

Our best-selling chair is the solid walnut dining chair with a black leather cushion, and the full range is in walnut dining chairs.

Frequently asked questions

What size dining table seats 6?

About 72 x 34–36 inches (183 x 86–91 cm) for six people to sit comfortably, three per side. A 60-inch table can seat six only if two sit at the ends.
